What Is Solar Noon?

Solar noon is the moment the sun crosses the local meridian — its highest point in the sky for the day. It does not usually fall on clock noon: the longitude offset from your timezone's meridian and the annual "equation of time" wobble shift solar noon by up to 16 minutes either side of clock noon.

The sun's altitude at solar noon is roughly 90° − |lat − declination|, so at the equator on an equinox it's nearly overhead, while near the poles it stays close to the horizon.
